New Year tree of the Republic of Crimea: Byzantine traditions from Bakhchysarai
The fir
tree of the Republic of Crimea presents Crimean ceramics, a little-known folk
art craft of Bakhchysarai. The items are made by Crimean craftsmen specially
for the New Year tree at VDNH.
Ceramics is one of the most ancient kinds of crafts, it has been widespread in Crimea for many centuries.
The style of original ceramic products is evidence of the
fusion of Byzantine traditions and decorative art of the East. One of the
centers of production in Crimea of this period was Alushta.
Simple and convenient vessels with paired handles ("k'osh k'ulak"), a milk bowl ("bakraj"), round pots ("bardakh", "chelmek"), and ceramic cachepots ("gul skull") became widespread in everyday life.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by 89 New Year trees, each of them representing a region of the country. The RUSSIA EXPO is open from Tuesday through Sunday, Monday is a technical day. All expositions and events are free of charge.
