Christmas tree of the Voronezh region: messages in the flag alphabet and the Providence of God
The design
concept of the New Year spruce is based on the idea of showing Voronezh as the
cradle of the Russian navy.
In March
1696 Peter the Great came to Voronezh for the first time. This visit became
fateful for the city - the tsar's will changed both the appearance and the
future of the fortress.
The city
stood on the bank of the Voronezh River, not far from the Don - in a place
convenient for navigation. In the vicinity grew century-old oaks and pines,
which served as a material for the construction of ships. Lipetsk iron ore,
from which cannons and other weapons could be smelted, lay nearby.
The decor
features elements of marine theme: wooden anchors and helms of various kinds,
Voronezh bell, soldiers in uniforms of the Peter the Great period.
There is
also an image of the ship Goto Predestination (or Providence of God) - this is
the first line ship of the Russian Navy. The ship was laid down on November 19
(29), 1698 at the shipyard of Voronezh.
Semaphore
flags were used instead of garlands. Flags of the international code of signals
were developed in 1857, they are used in the navy to transmit messages between
ships. With the help of the flag alphabet, the messages "Happy New
Year" and "Voronezh is the cradle of the Russian Navy" were
decorated on the fir tree.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by 89 New Year trees, each of them representing a region of the country with its folk arts, crafts and traditions. And the 90th blue spruce symbolizes the RUSSIA EXPO itself.
