Christmas tree of the Zaporozhye region: South Russian ornaments and silhouettes of vytynanka
Copies of
ornaments from the Melitopol Museum, which were prepared by the museum staff
especially for the project, were used in the decoration of the fir tree.
The
ornament runs along the Christmas tree as large ribbons, and thin ribbons
around the red balls. The whole fir tree seems to be placed on a cart with a
wooden wheel and wicker sides, on which jugs and sheaves of cereal crops are
placed. They symbolize the fertile Zaporozhye lands.
Local
craftsmen handmade toys dedicated to the cultural monuments of the region: Cuman
stone women, Southern Elephant, the oldest Holy Trinity Church in the
Zaporozhye region, the sea, harvest fields, ancestral tree,
"vytynanki" (openwork images based on cutting out silhouettes and
patterns from a sheet of white or colored paper using scissors or a special
knife) with ethnic motifs.
