On 29 October, the branch of the National Centre RUSSIA in the Primorye region hosted a lecture by neurologist of the highest category Dmitry Khan titled "Stroke is Not a Sentence! The FAST Window of Salvation!" The doctor explained how to recognise a stroke and what actions can save a person’s life. The event was organised by the regional branch of the United Russia party and was timed to coincide with World Stroke Day.

Dmitry Khan is Head of the Neurology Department for Patients with Acute Cerebrovascular Disorders at Primorye Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1, Chief Freelance Specialist of the Primorye Ministry of Healthcare on cerebrovascular diseases, and Chief Neurologist of the Ministry of Healthcare of Russia for the Far Eastern Federal District.

"We have only 4.5 hours — the so-called therapeutic window. During this time, it is possible to restore blood flow and return a person to life without severe consequences. The key is to recognise the symptoms and call an ambulance immediately," stressed Dmitry Khan.

The doctor noted that stroke is one of the most common diseases, and often a person does not realise what is happening. To help identify it in time, experts use the FAST rule (known in Russia as "UDAR"):

• Face — smile: one side droops;

• Arm — weakness in one arm;

• Speech — slurred or impaired;

• Time — call 103 immediately.

If even one of these signs is noticed, it is crucial to call doctors without delay — every minute counts. The window of opportunity to help a person after a stroke lasts just 4.5 hours.

The lecturer also drew attention to the causes of stroke. The main risk factors include hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation.

"There is no such thing as ‘working blood pressure of 160 over 100’ — that is already dangerous. Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, avoiding smoking, maintaining physical activity, and eating a balanced diet are the best ways to prevent stroke," said the doctor.

Dmitry Khan reminded the audience that stroke is not a sentence if one acts quickly and correctly.

The lecture concluded with an active discussion: participants asked questions about stroke, and the speaker provided detailed answers. Attendees also received useful materials and leaflets with information on stroke symptoms and first-aid measures.
