The lecture "Whoever Writes the Past Controls the Future" will be held at the National Centre RUSSIA on 28 August at 19:00. The Director of the "I Remember" Foundation, Artyom Drabkin, invites guests to discuss the role of history in the modern world and explore how era-defining narratives are created and why deeply rooted myths are dangerous.

"We will examine a wide range of questions. Were historical sources really falsified? How are history and culture connected? We will explore how such a myth as 'Russia is a prison of nations' emerged, for example, and what role Karamzin played in our perception of Boris Godunov. Together, all of this will allow us to answer the question of how historians can help Russia break free from a spiral model of development and whether they are actually capable of doing so. Come along — it will be fascinating. We look forward to welcoming you," Artyom Drabkin said.

The discussion will also feature Alexandra Konovchenko, Programme Director of the Russian Military Historical Society (RMHS), and Konstantin Kusmaul, a Russian writer and history teacher at the "Golden Section" School. Together with leading experts, guests will discover how Karamzin’s hypothesis became Mussorgsky’s opera, what the "Book of Veles" really is — an authentic artefact or a skilful forgery — and where the expression "Moscow is the Third Rome" originated.

The event partners are the Russian Military Historical Society (RMHS) and the "I Remember" Foundation.
