Canadian economist Joseph Potvin to present new ideas about the future of the global economy at the National Centre RUSSIA and SPIEF 2025
Canadian economist Joseph Potvin will speak about the importance of international cooperation and the rethinking of monetary systems during the presentation of a report based on the outcomes of the Open Dialogue "The Future of the World. New Platform for Global Growth," to be held at a press conference on June 16 at the National Centre RUSSIA.
The Open Dialogue took place at the National Centre RUSSIA at the end of April 2025 and served as a platform for discussing the future of the global economy. Scholars, entrepreneurs, journalists, postgraduates, students, theorists and practitioners were invited to take part. Experts from various fields submitted around 700 essays in four thematic areas: "Investments in Human Capital," "Investments in Environment," "Investments in Technology," and "Investments in Connectivity." The authors of the best works participated in the Open Dialogue in person.
They will also attend the presentation of the report on the outcomes of the Open Dialogue "The Future of the World. New Platform for Global Growth" on June 16 and the thematic session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will focus on the report.
For Canadian economist Joseph Potvin, one of the most challenging aspects in preparing for the Open Dialogue at the National Centre RUSSIA was creating a three-minute presentation to summarise an essay that spanned three pages.
"I saw the announcement titled: 'Moscow to host an Open Dialogue on the Future of the World'. It said: 'The event will address pressing economic challenges and explore innovative solutions for long-term progress.' I thought, 'Great! I believe I have something to say about this!' But when my three-page essay was accepted, I was told I would have... three minutes for the presentation. Three minutes to outline a critical economic issue and propose an innovative solution! I joked to my wife: 'Well, I could always write a poem!'", shared Joseph Potvin.
In the end, the economist presented his vision of new monetary systems in poetic form, at the same time highlighting Russia’s deep connection with poetry. Now Joseph Potvin will be among the experts at the presentation of the report following the Open Dialogue, where he will speak about his experience of participating in the international event and elaborate on the topic of his essay.
"It is through international cooperation and dialogue that we can jointly create an adaptive and environmentally sustainable monetary system — based on shared principles, yet multipolar and pluralistic," the international expert emphasised.
Joseph Potvin is convinced that the Open Dialogue of the National Centre RUSSIA enables participants not only to develop theories about the future of the global economy but also to devise methods for achieving positive global scenarios.
Alongside him, other authors of the best essays will take part in the presentation of the report based on the results of the Open Dialogue on June 16. Among them:
- Naila Mehrabova, member of the supervisory board of the Azersun holding, Azerbaijan;
- Yelizaveta Romanova, student at the Russian State Social University, Russia;
- Murat Dudarev, expert of the Committee on Small and Medium Enterprises of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
The next step in the development of the Open Dialogue will be the session "Shaping a New Platform for Global Growth," which will take place on June 18 as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The discussion will be moderated by Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office of the Russian Federation. The session will continue the key themes of the forum at the National Centre RUSSIA and bring together experts to discuss strategies for sustainable development and international economic cooperation.
In response to numerous requests from international participants, the Open Dialogue of the National Centre RUSSIA will become an annual event. The second forum is expected to take place in Moscow as early as 2026. In addition, a dedicated platform has been launched at dialog.russia.ru for online interaction between participants.
The press conference on June 16 will be streamed on the website and social media of the National Centre RUSSIA.
