Moscow Fashion Week at the RUSSIA EXPO ended with a gala show of Russian fashion schools
The final
gala show of the Moscow Fashion Week was held at the RUSSIA EXPO -
designers-students of the Kosygin Russian State University, the Moscow Art and
Industry Institute, the National Institute of Design and the METRICS Online
Academy of Branding and Design presented their collections.
The models
presented the collections of young designers under the live performance of the
OTYKEN ethnic band, which includes representatives of the indigenous peoples of
Russia: Chulym, Ket, Selkup, Khakass and Dolgan. OTYKEN holds concerts all over
the world, the band's compositions have been highly appreciated by Iggy Pop,
Chris Brown, Erykah Badu, Armin van Buuren and DJ Snake, and in 2022 the band's
song called Genesis was nominated in Global Spin - a Grammy project.
"Moscow
Fashion Week is a very important contribution to the development of Russia. The
designers have done a great job. We want to wish them prosperity. Youth in our
country is developing very rapidly," said OTYKEN member Muna.
The joint fashion show, during which students of Kosygin Russian State University presented their works, is largely connected with Russian culture. The works are devoted to the era of Ivan the Terrible, the transformation of culture in the early XXI century, Russian crafts and space, said Russian designer, head of the Costume Design Department of the Kosygin Russian State University Sergei Sysoev.
"Today
marks the debut of the sophomores of the author's master's program, where young
designers from all over Russia are studying. For two and a half years they have
been busy writing dissertations, researching their topic, understanding who
they are as fashion artists. Most of the projects are based on Russian cultural
identity - I think this is paramount now. We need to vividly show how we differ
from the rest, to demonstrate our uniqueness. This is definitely the future of
Russian fashion," said Sergei Sysoev.
The show
was remarkable for dramatic images and the use of original prints. The show
featured mini-collections that included shining dresses with fluorescent
patterns, quilted jackets with eye-catching patches, multicolored naive images
reminiscent of folk toys, avant-garde cocoon dresses, coats and jackets with
shining metallic decorations, and snow-white sets reminiscent of the Swan
Princess, trimmed with feathers and lace.
Moscow Art
and Industry Institute presented 30 best looks from the winter semester show.
The show was filled with models in a variety of styles, from more casual to
avant-garde. Trendy closet elements included corsets, cargo pants, metallic
skirts and tight-fitting tops, including grunge style. They were complemented
by original design solutions: tight dress with shaped cut-outs, spectacular
"spacesuit", scarlet tiered dress with torn edges, hyper voluminous
white bomber, black lacquered leather cocoon dress. The show ended with models
making bold exits, showcasing the clothes not as an everyday closet, but as a
separate art form.
"Now
we are presenting our students, each one of them is great in their own way.
They themselves teach us new things - they bring fabrics, accessories from all
over the world. The things presented here are the quintessence of our work,
which is a surprise even for us," said Alexei Egorov, rector of the Moscow
Art and Industry Institute.
The team of young designers of the National Institute of Design showed mini-collections of original informal things, adapted, however, to everyday life. Models in denim dresses and overalls with accent stitching with contrasting threads and hand dyeing; futuristic sets in black, gray and silver colors with soft folds and draperies appeared on the catwalk. The keynote of the show was the total black looks - practical, but with special accent details. Large eyelets, ties and asymmetry made the show interesting and memorable.
Students of
the young METRICS Online Academy of Branding and Design demonstrated confident
work with color and shape, as well as with complex textures of materials. The
group show included both fantasy looks and everyday original models. The
central outfits of the show were a metallized dress with numerous decorative
details, a bright leather jacket worn over a catsuit, sculptural jackets made
of colored leather, tops with airy floral decorations, neon raincoat,
snow-white asymmetric maxi-dress with draperies and bright scarlet dress with
flying fabric on the back.
