The National Centre RUSSIA congratulates the Irkutsk region on Region Day
On 27 September, the Irkutsk region celebrates Region Day.
Eighty-eight years ago, in 1937, the region was created by a decree of the
Central Executive Committee of the USSR, which divided the East Siberian region
into the Irkutsk and Chita regions.
"The
Irkutsk region is a land of vast opportunities and large-scale projects. The
industrial, scientific, educational, tourist, and other potential of the Angara
region was fully presented at the International RUSSIA EXPO. Millions of
Russians who visited our regional stand during that time saw for themselves
that 'the Irkutsk region is the golden link of Russia' and learned the most fascinating
facts about our region. Moreover, the stand of the Irkutsk region was ranked
among the best in the nationwide vote," said the Governor of the Irkutsk
Region, Igor Kobzev.
At the
International RUSSIA EXPO, which ran from 4 November 2023 to 8 July 2024,
visitors to the Irkutsk region’s stand could learn about the region’s cultural
traditions, its industrial, investment and tourism potential, and take part in
workshops on traditional crafts. Today the Irkutsk region is part of the
Siberian Federal District, which is represented at the "Journey Across
Russia" exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA.
"It is
important to us that even now visitors to the National Centre RUSSIA can
discover the unique Irkutsk region, its natural beauty and the majesty of Lake
Baikal as part of the project 'Journey Across Russia', where the Angara region
is presented in the Siberia section," Kobzev added.
The Irkutsk
region is one of Russia’s largest and most distinctive regions. Along
with Lake Baikal, it is known for its powerful energy industry (including three
hydroelectric power plants on the Angara River), gold mining, forests and other
natural resources. The region is also rich in historical and cultural legacy.
It preserves both unique architecture, such as the Circum-Baikal Railway, and
archaeological sites. For example, the Glazkovsky necropolis, where burials and
settlements dating back more than 35,000 years were discovered.
Guided tours of the "Journey Across Russia"
exposition and insights into the Siberian Federal District are free of charge
with advance registration. Full details are available on the website of the
National Centre RUSSIA in the "Events" section.
