The foundation pit for the new National Centre RUSSIA building is more than 75% complete. The complex is being built above active metro tunnels in challenging engineering and geological conditions. Vladimir Yefimov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Development Policy and Construction, provided an update on the project.

"Key preparatory works are under way at the construction site of the National Centre RUSSIA. The site was cleared in advance, guide walls were built and the diaphragm wall was completed. Excavation is currently continuing: 550,000 cubic metres of soil have been removed out of a total of 670,000 cubic metres, while around 40% of the strutting system has been installed. This makes it possible to proceed with the installation of the main structures of the future building. Construction of the National Centre RUSSIA is running slightly ahead of schedule," Vladimir Yefimov noted.

During the preparatory stage, builders relocated external utility networks outside the construction area, installed a groundwater lowering system and began concrete preparation works.

The new National Centre RUSSIA building is being constructed above active metro tunnels in engineering and geological conditions classified in the highest, third category of complexity due to an abundance of pressurised groundwater in the soil. Leading specialist expert organisations are involved in the project to ensure maximum accuracy and reliability of the geotechnical solutions.

To minimise risks and ensure safety, all work in hazardous areas was carried out exclusively at night during a 2.5-hour maintenance window. This stage has now been fully completed.

The new National Centre RUSSIA building will be able to accommodate up to 20,000 visitors at a time. Its total floor area will be around 205,000 square metres. It will include exposition spaces, a transformable 3,500-seat concert hall, media and press centres, as well as venues for business meetings and networking, and food courts. The building is scheduled to open in 2029.

The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, launched construction of the new building on 26 March 2026. It will become an architectural landmark of global significance and a symbol of modern Russia, reflecting the country's creative potential, multinational culture and commitment to innovation.
