The founder of the cultural center in Kuwait, Amer Huneidi, spoke about the importance of the "Inventing the Future" Symposium
The founder of the Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) cultural center in Kuwait, collector Amer Huneidi, believes that the future can only be built through dialogue between cultures. This is why his organization participated in the International Symposium "Inventing the Future" at the National Centre RUSSIA.
In the interview, the renowned gallerist discussed the role artists play in shaping the global perspective and how art will evolve over the next few decades.
What is the main significance of the Symposium for you?
The invitation to participate in the “Inventing the Future” Symposium emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in fostering global dialogue. At Contemporary Art Platform, we aim to share insights on how international collaboration can inspire innovation and help build a shared vision for the future. By exploring art’s role in bridging differences, we hope to spark conversations about our collective responsibility to create a more connected and compassionate world.
What contribution can artists make to humanity's future?
Artists serve as the visionaries of our time, acting as the conscience of society. They possess a unique ability to provoke thought, challenge the status quo, and illuminate the human experience. By addressing complex global issues—such as political and social events, climate change, social justice, and cultural identity — artists can mobilize communities, foster empathy, and ultimately shape a future that prioritizes our shared humanity.
How do you select paintings for your collection?
My collection includes artworks by Arab artists that capture diverse periods and pivotal moments in the Arab world, reflecting a connection to my own origins. I’m drawn to pieces that resonate deeply with the cultural and historical narratives of our region. For me, a work must evoke a powerful sense of emotion and provoke reflection. It should tell a story that transcends its immediate visual impact, creating a timeless dialogue between the viewer and the essence of the piece. My goal is to build a collection that not only celebrates individual talent but also reflects the shared human experience through the lens of our heritage and identity.
How are modern artists different from those of the past?
While today’s artists benefit from unprecedented access to platforms and resources, the landscape is equally fraught with challenges. The sheer volume of content and the fast-paced nature of the digital age can overshadow individual voices. However, those who are truly committed to their craft will always find ways to innovate and connect with audiences, just as their predecessors did. It’s a different battle, but one that can yield remarkable results for those who dare to push boundaries.
Is digital art truly art?
Digital art is indeed a valid and powerful form of artistic expression. It pushes the limits of creativity and opens up new possibilities that traditional mediums may not be able to achieve. As collectors and enthusiasts, it’s essential to embrace this evolution in the art world, understanding that all forms of art reflect the cultural and technological landscape of our time. Digital art, with its unique capabilities, enriches the artistic dialogue and broadens our appreciation for the diverse ways in which artists communicate their visions.
Can virtual tours replace an actual museum visit?
Virtual experiences are a powerful complement to physical art spaces, democratizing access to culture. However, they should not replace the visceral connection that comes from experiencing art in person. Galleries must leverage technology to enhance the visitor experience, creating immersive environments that invite deeper engagement. The challenge lies in crafting compelling narratives and experiences that encourage audiences to step away from their screens and into the gallery.
What is your opinion on the younger generation of artists?
The younger generation of artists is an extraordinary force, filled with innovative perspectives that challenge traditional paradigms. They are redefining what it means to be an artist today. Their ability to address contemporary issues with authenticity and vigor places them at the forefront of a new artistic movement that is equally impactful.
What do you think of attempts by AI to create paintings and write texts?
AI’s foray into art raises profound questions about creativity and authorship. While AI can generate technically proficient works, it lacks the emotional depth and lived experience that human artists bring to their craft. I believe that while audiences may appreciate AI-generated art for its novelty, the soul of art—its ability to connect, inspire, and provoke—will always be rooted in human experience, ensuring that the essence of art remains uniquely ours.
What are the most significant artworks in your life?
Most impact was a political painting that tackles the issue of the occupation of Palestine and the brutal treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
Why is art essential to humanity?
Art is the very essence of what it means to be human; it feeds our spirit and nurtures our understanding of the world. In times of crisis, art becomes a refuge, a means of expression, and a catalyst for change. It connects us, fosters dialogue, and encourages us to envision a better future. The significance of art lies not only in its beauty but in its ability to elevate our consciousness, inspire action, and remind us of our shared humanity.
