He liberated Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Austria: daughter of Marshal of Aviation Vladimir Sudets became guest of the National Centre RUSSIA podcast
The National Centre RUSSIA presents a new project — a podcast series titled "Tell Me About the Victory," dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and to the heroes whose feats will forever remain in the memory of generations.
In the second episode, the guest of the podcast is Galina Sudets — daughter of Marshal of Aviation and Hero of the Soviet Union Vladimir Sudets.
During the Second World War, he served as the Soviet Commander of the Air Force and Commander of the 17th Air Army, and after the war he became Marshal of Aviation. People used to say about him: "He flew and lived ahead of his time."
"My father was a very well-educated person. Before the war, he mastered 52 types of aircraft; in addition, he was a skilled mechanic. Major General of Aviation Shepelev came up with a new approach to repairing damaged equipment, and Vladimir Sudets liked the idea. They began setting up field repair workshops on the spot. This significantly accelerated the return of equipment to service," Galina Sudets noted.
Vladimir Sudets took part in the liberation of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. At that time, German forces attempted to capture Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito and other members of the army leadership, but the 17th Air Army under the command of Marshal Sudets helped them escape by air, and the Germans failed in their mission.
"My father also took part in the liberation of Austria. There was an order to preserve as many historical landmarks in Vienna as possible. The battle was difficult, but the Soviet troops succeeded. My mother, together with me and my newborn sister, arrived in Vienna on a military transport aircraft, and it was there that we celebrated Victory Day," recalls Galina Sudets.
Additionally, the daughter of the Marshal of Aviation spoke about her parents' meeting in a military camp near Moscow and their family.
