The Mordovian Christmas tree at VDNH is guarded by Kuigorozh
In Mordovian mythology there is a fantastic creature that brings wealth to the house - Kuigorozh. This wooden figure of this creature was presented by Mordovian craftsmen for the region's fir tree.
According to folk beliefs, Kuigorozh looks like an owl with a snake's tail (literally: "kuy" - snake, "gorozh" – owl). There is a belief that if a rooster that has lived for 6 years lays an egg on the seventh year, Kuigorozh can be born from it. According to another version, the egg must be taken from the owl from the hollow tree. It is believed that the character comes from evil spirits. Therefore, when searching for the egg, it is forbidden to cross oneself.
The craftsmen also made products reflecting Mordovian folk patterns and ornaments. Dolls in national costumes and animal figures complement the decor of the New Year tree.
On the Main Alley of VDNH visitors are greeted by New Year fir trees, each of them representing a region of the country.
