Visitors will be introduced to the culture of the indigenous peoples of Chukotka at the "Journey Across Russia" exposition
A new large-scale project, "Journey Across Russia," will launch at the National Centre RUSSIA on March 1. The exposition will showcase all federal districts of the country. In the areas dedicated to the Far East, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the culture and traditions of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of Chukotka.
These include the Chukchi, Eskimos, Evens, Chuvans, Kereks, and Yukaghirs. Many representatives of these peoples strive to preserve the traditional way of life and the crafts of their ancestors. For example, the Indigenous peoples of Chukotka are renowned for their bone carving, which they use to decorate weapons as well as create decorative figurines of people and animals.
The Chukchi are the most numerous Indigenous people of Chukotka. One of the main sectors of their economy is reindeer herding, along with hunting marine animals. The traditional religion of the Indigenous people is shamanism: the Chukchi believe in the forces of nature and benevolent spirits. Traditional celebrations also play a significant role in their way of life.
It was among the Northern peoples that the first sunglasses appeared. They were quite different from the modern accessory and consisted of eye coverings made of leather or bone with narrow slits. This invention provided good protection from the sun reflected off the snow, which can be very dangerous in northern regions. Additionally, the Chukchi also invented a sunshade.
The straw for drinks was also first used by the Northern peoples. These straws were made from thin bones.
At the "Journey Across Russia" exposition, guests will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the indigenous peoples of Chukotka, including through interactive items. For example, visitors to the National Centre RUSSIA will be able to strike shamanic drums on display.
In anticipation of Easter, the Department Store of the National Centre RUSSIA has prepared a wide range of themed items and gifts for visitors.
The children's workshop "Houses and Little Homes in the City" was held on 19 April at the National Centre RUSSIA.
The large-scale international project Open Dialogue "The Future of the World. New Platform for Global Growth" will take place at the National Centre RUSSIA from 28 to 30 April 2025.
