Symbol of friendship between Russia and China: unique roly-poly dolls from the Tambov Region to be presented in Harbin
The National Centre RUSSIA will present an exclusive collection of nevalyashka dolls (roly-poly dolls) at the exposition in Harbin, China, created especially for the X Russia-China EXPO, which will be held from 17 to 21 May. The special series is dedicated to cultural dialogue and friendship between Russia and China. The toy was created by the National Centre RUSSIA together with the Kotovskiye Navalyashki enterprise from the Tambov Region.
One of the roly-poly dolls is made in the traditional colours of China: red and yellow. These shades symbolise respect for the cultural legacy and national traditions of the Chinese people. The doll’s outfit is decorated with an image of a wild plum blossom, one of the significant symbols of Chinese culture. The blooming plum blossom represents the birth of something new, resilience, inner strength and the ability to overcome any difficulties.
The second roly-poly doll is presented as a child in a panda costume. This character has become a symbol of friendship, harmony and warm relations between Russia and China. The image of the panda is well known and loved around the world, and within the exposition it highlights the idea of cultural exchange and the two countries’ mutual interest in each other.
A nevalyashka doll is much more than just a children’s toy. For decades, it has remained one of Russia’s most recognisable symbols, familiar to several generations. The doll’s smile and bright outfit are associated with joy, optimism and vitality, while its ability always to return to its original position has made it a symbol of resilience, self-belief and the ability to overcome trials.
The collection will become part of the exposition of the flagship project of the National Centre RUSSIA, the Department Store, where EXPO visitors will be presented with goods by Russian manufacturers, items of folk arts and crafts, and the cultural traditions of different regions of the country. The stand will pay special attention to preserving craft legacy and introducing international audiences to a modern interpretation of Russian cultural symbols.
