On June 24, the final of the "Knowledge. Game" tournament, the sports version of the game "What? Where? When?", was held among schoolchildren and college students at the National Centre RUSSIA. The winner of the intellectual contest was a team named " the Formula of a Rectangular Owl" from the Centre for Extended Mathematics Education, the city of Kurgan. Nine other teams that showed the best results were awarded with valuable prizes. In total, over 7,000 youngsters took part in the large-scale intellectual contest organized by the Russian Society "Knowledge" under the license of the copyright holder "Igra-TV" TV Company", LLC. They represented over 1,1 thousand teams from 86 regions of Russia. "Rosatom" State Atomic Energy Corporation was a general partner of the event.
In 2025, the year of the 50th anniversary of "What? Where? When?", the final of the tournament brought together 525 people of 75 teams from 38 Russian regions. They all showed their erudition and resourcefulness in a cycle of qualifying games, as well as during the online "Knowledge. Game" Cup. In general, each contestant's place of the final game was fought for by 15 teams. Leaders in the number of finalist teams were: the Penza Region, the Republic of Tatarstan, the Republic of Mari-El, the Kirov and Belgorod regions. Teams that have already been winners and prize-winners of intellectual contests in previous years also managed to reach the finals in Moscow.
This is how the team called "Sunstroke", from the School "Sun", the city of Kazan, who was the winner of the tournament "What? Where? When?" of year 2024, came to the National Centre RUSSIA again. Also among participants of year 2025 there were contestants of previous years: the "Shatreshki" team of Lyceum No. 11, the city of Chelyabinsk, the "Abudefdufs the Ordinary" team from Ryazan, and many others.
"More than 450 of the most talented schoolchildren and college students gathered today at one venue — at the National Centre RUSSIA. These are finalists from all over the country, starting with large metropolitan areas and ending with small towns and villages, and they have gone through a serious selection process. Everyone who is here today already has a personal victory, and proved that they are ready for the intellectual challenges. I sincerely congratulate all the participants on this achievement, and especially those whose names will be announced from the stage today. I wish you to go further, continue to grow, to learn and believe in yourself, because this is how a generation is brought up that can change the future," said Maxim Dreval, Director General of the Russian Society "Knowledge".
The finalists played six rounds, during which they answered 60 questions on a variety of topics — from natural sciences to history and culture. One of the rounds was about the 80th anniversary of the nuclear industry, which Russia is celebrating in 2025.
The results of the game revealed that "the Formula of the Rectangular Owl" team from the Centre of Extended Math Education, Kurgan city, took the first place. The top ten also included teams from the Orenburg, Chelyabinsk, Penza, Kirov and Ryazan regions, as well as from the Republic of Tatarstan, the Udmurt Republic and the Perm Region. All of them got valuable gifts from the event's partners. The team "Keepers of Knowledge" of secondary school No. 35 in the city of Orsk (the Orenburg region), which won the thematic round, was given a special award — a trip under the program "Hospitable Cities of "Rosatom". Among other things, Grigory Skokov from "the Formula of the Rectangular Owl" team of the Centre for Math Additional Education at Kurgan city, having achieved the best personal score, received a certificate of participation in the "Rosatom"'s "Icebreaker of Knowledge" international Arctic expedition to the North Pole from the Rosatom State Corporation.
"In 2025, the year of the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry, "Rosatom" State Atomic Energy Corporation became the general partner of the "Knowledge. Game" tournament in the sports version of game "What? Where? When?" among schoolchildren and college students for the first time. Three words — "pride", "inspiration", and "dream" — became the main slogan of our anniversary. The USSR nuclear industry began in 1945 to ensure the country's security, but today we are living another big dream: to develop environmentally friendly nuclear energy and advanced methods of nuclear medicine, to design new materials and modern digital technologies -- for the benefit of all mankind. We see how the younger generation strives for knowledge and creativity, and we see that the young people are ready to solve complex problems. This inspires us, and gives us confidence: Russia's future is in safe hands.Science and technology will develop because of the energy and commitment of young talents," said Alexey Likhachev, CEO of "Rosatom" State Atomic Energy Corporation.
The partners of the final game were: the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation; Rosmolodezh and its "More Than a Journey" program; "Igra-TV" TV Company", LLC; autonomous non-profit organization "The Energy of Development", and the "Prosveshcheniye" Group of companies.
To refresh your memory: a new season of sports version of "What? Where? When?" tournament among schoolchildren and college students started with a series of qualifying games. They took place every week from April 30 to May 28, 2025. At the same time, partner tournaments were organized by the brand's copyright holder, "Igra-TV TV Company", LLC. An additional opportunity to qualify for the final was the online "Knowledge. Game" Cup, in which could participate everyone who had not joined the tournament at the time of the qualifying games.
The sports version of the tournament "What? Where? When?" is held not only for schoolchildren and college students, but also for all fans of intellectual games over the age of 18. Moreover, in the new season, the intellectual contest is once again made up of quizzes, so teams with up to 5 players will be able to test their logic and factual knowledge via answering different kinds of questions.
At the same time, the Russian Society "Knowledge" keeps on actively developing educational game formats. For instance, the Russian Language Day was preceded by the intellectual game "Say it in Russian", developed by the "Knowledge" Society in collaboration with the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute. The game was presented on the VKontakte social network. It contains a number of short matches, where the players are suggested to replace borrowed words with their Russian counterparts. This stimulates the development of speech culture and a respectful attitude towards the Russian language. In two weeks after the launch, more than 200,000 users from all over the country joined the project.
