Orientation towards families with many children is growing in society — Tatyana Golikova
In Russia, the orientation towards larger families is strengthening: both the number of such families and the number of children in them are increasing. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Tatyana Golikova, at the Expanded Board Meeting of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation at the National Centre RUSSIA. Against this backdrop, the government is developing new national projects and strategies in the field of family and demographic policy, as well as support for the older generation.
"The orientation towards larger families in society is
growing — by the end of last year, the number of large families increased by
10.6% and exceeded 2.9 million, while the number of children in large families
grew by 590,000 and reached 9.5 million," said Deputy Prime Minister of
the Russian Federation Tatyana Golikova.
She added that demographic issues are inseparably linked
with family incomes. Wage growth, employment measures and targeted support have
helped reduce the poverty rate. By the end of 2025, the poverty level stood at
6.7%, which is 0.4 percentage points lower than in 2024.
According to Tatyana Golikova, extensive work made it
possible to prevent a significant decline in the birth rate. In 18 regions,
including those that had previously shown negative dynamics, growth in
indicators was recorded. These include the city of Sevastopol, the Republic of
Mordovia, the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area, the Leningrad region, the Vologda region,
the Kaliningrad region, the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Ryazan region, the
Jewish Autonomous Region, the Republic of Adygea, the Karachay-Cherkess
Republic, and the Chukotka Autonomous Area.
Particular attention is being given to systemic measures within
national projects and strategies. Last year the implementation of new national
projects — "Family" and "Personnel" — began, along with two
key strategic documents: the Strategy for the Implementation of Family and
Demographic Policy and Support for Large Families, and the Strategy in the
Interests of Older Citizens. These initiatives are designed to create a
comprehensive system of support for Russian families at different stages of the
life cycle and to strengthen the country’s demographic potential.
