The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, welcomed participants of the International Forum of Indigenous Peoples, which is being held at the National Centre RUSSIA in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The President highlighted the importance of preserving the languages, culture and traditions of indigenous peoples, as well as international cooperation in this area.

"I consider your meeting an important and timely initiative and a significant contribution to strengthening humanitarian cooperation across Eurasia and the world as a whole. Preserving native languages, distinctive cultures and the customs of indigenous peoples is one of the important issues on the global agenda and requires joint efforts by government bodies and international organisations. I would like to emphasise that Russia is committed to developing constructive cooperation in this area with all interested partners," Vladimir Putin said in his message to the forum participants.

The President noted that supporting indigenous peoples is a priority in Russia. In cooperation with public and volunteer organisations and national associations, efforts are being made to preserve the unique historical and spiritual legacy of small-numbered indigenous peoples, improve their quality of life and address social and economic issues. Projects are also being implemented in education, public awareness and the upbringing of younger generations.

"I am confident that your forum will be held in a creative and businesslike spirit and will help develop common approaches to addressing pressing challenges of our time. I wish you productive work and all the very best," the President said.

The International Forum of Indigenous Peoples is being held from 13 to 16 August at the National Centre RUSSIA in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. This year's theme is "Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Biodiversity and Climate". Participants include leaders of public organisations from different countries, UN experts, and representatives of government and business. The forum is addressing the sustainable development of indigenous peoples amid climate change, improvements to legislative mechanisms and support for traditional economic activities. Guests will also be able to visit the "Treasures of the North. Masters and Artists of Russia" exposition and fair and the "Nomadic Life of the North" festival, and discover the traditions, crafts and national cuisines of the peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East.
