Free-spirited Don Cossack dance: how a traditional dance became the voice of the historical territories at the National Centre RUSSIA

As the sharp beat of heels cuts across the stage in time with the orchestral melody and the rhythm of the dance seems to fill the entire space, centuries-old Cossack spirit comes alive before the audience. The "Don Cossack Dance", performed by the Donbass Honoured State Academic Song and Dance Ensemble, became a striking episode of the musical and choreographic parable "Khorovod", which premiered at the National Centre RUSSIA in spring 2026. The performance is like the voice of the historical territories, where a distinctive code of honour developed over many years at the crossroads of frontiers and cultures: to keep one’s word and stand firm to the end.

The roots of the dance reach deep into the Cossack traditions of the Don and Donbass, to a time when young people met one another through dance. The Cossacks believed that dancing was not mere entertainment, but a test of character and a distinctive form of dialogue in which everyone demonstrated their spirit, strength, agility and endurance. A special place in this tradition was held by the "combat" squat dance, an art born from military battles. Infantrymen used low jumps and sliding movements to bring down an opponent’s horse or evade a sabre strike. These combat techniques later formed the basis of dance steps, transforming the performance into a true historical and choreographic poem about courage and the people’s love of freedom.

The dance features rapid squat steps, spirited kicks, resounding claps and expressive "dialogues" between the performers. Every movement carries a particular meaning, from imitations of trick riding to daring jumps that require physical training and courage. It is an ode to freedom, temperament and an open-hearted joy of life, and a story about the special energy that the Don Cossacks generously shared at village celebrations and fairground contests.

Yet the Don Cossack dance is celebrated not only for its courage and spirit. It also includes a distinctive female part, proud, graceful and restrained in its beauty. The Cossack women do not compete with their partners in strength or agility. They conduct the dialogue differently: through soft steps, a stately posture, barely perceptible turns of the shoulders and the movement of their scarves like wings. These female movements convey respect for their partners, personal dignity and the very feminine wisdom that preserved the family hearth for centuries. In this way, the dance allows each performer to remain themselves while creating harmony together.

Today, when the Donbass Ensemble performs this piece on stage, the audience sees more than artists. They see the guardians of a centuries-old tradition. The Don Cossack dance is a reminder that the traditional culture of the historical territories is not disappearing into the past, but continues to amaze with its beauty and sincerity even those who have never visited the Don steppes. The dancers’ participation in a project on the scale of "Khorovod" at the National Centre RUSSIA also became an embodiment of unity: a dance that was once a language of acquaintance has now become a language of friendship between the peoples of our country.
