The artist in darkness: the meaning behind the "Le Orla / Self-Destruction" series at the exposition "Legacy for the Future"
The
exposition "Legacy for the Future" continues at the National Centre
RUSSIA. It features over 200 works by artists, sculptors, and photographers
from various countries. Behind each piece lies a unique story, sometimes
sorrowful and even tragic. The deep symbolism of the Brazilian artist’s work
was unveiled by guide Yelena Usova.
The work
titled "Le Orla / Self-Destruction" by a graduate of the Federal
University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, presents a series of paintings. The
series comprises three self-portraits. At first glance, they appear identical:
Monique Queiroz depicts herself in the same outfit, maintaining the same pose
and facial expression. However, the differing color schemes create distinct
moods. One painting offers hope, another provokes anxiety, while the third
evokes sadness. When the viewer takes in all three as a single work, its
profound meaning is revealed.
"Unfortunately,
while the artist was working on these paintings, she began to lose her vision.
This is a challenge for anyone, but for an artist, it can become a true
tragedy. This series shows how darkness envelops a person and highlights the
importance of finding light within oneself during such moments," explained
Yelena Usova.
The guide
also noted that despite her illness, Monique Queiroz was able to attend the
opening of the exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA. A vibrant and beautiful
young woman, she became a source of inspiration for everyone around her through
her strength of spirit and positive outlook on life.
The
exposition "Legacy for the Future" presents works by young artists
from six countries: Russia, China, India, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Iran. Through
their art, these creators offer personal responses to contemporary challenges.
They reflect on the present, express their attitude towards the past, and
contemplate the future.
Visitors to
the National Centre can enjoy the exposition either independently or by joining
a free guided tour lasting 30 or 60 minutes. Registration is available on the
website in the "Events" section.
The
