Republic of Karelia
On July 25, 1923 it was transformed into the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and on March 31, 1940 - into the Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic.
On July 16, 1958, the Republic reacquired the status of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Since November 13, 1991 it has been the Republic of Karelia.
The Republic covers an area of 180.5 thousand square kilometers. The western border of Karelia coincides with the state border of Russia and Finland and extends for 798 km.
38% of the territory of Karelia belongs to the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
There are over 60 thousand lakes and 23 thousand rivers in the region.
