Apple tree. Tambov region
During the nationwide voting for the selection of plants as green symbols of the country, as part of the environmental campaign "Alley of Russia," over 8,000 people voted for the symbolic tree of the Tambov region. The apple tree received the most votes.
This is not surprising. The history of the Tambov region's symbol is closely linked with the activities of the great scientist, breeder, and biologist Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin.
The first images of Michurin's apples can be found in the pages with sketches of fruits from the scientist's diary. In 1921, Michurin's apples and pears were exhibited in Tambov, and soon they became known in Moscow. Nikolai Gorbunov, the secretary of the Sovnarkom, heard about the self-taught Michurin from someone and told Lenin about him. Throughout his life, Ivan Vladimirovich bred more than 300 varieties of apples, pears, plums, cherries, blackberries, currants, roses, and other plants, and published about 150 scientific works.
The scientist's name is well-known far beyond the Tambov region. In 1932, the city of Kozlov was renamed Michurinsk in his honor, and it has been Russia's first and only agro-industrial science city for over 20 years.
The scientific legacy of Ivan Michurin has been further developed in the works of his students and followers and continues to serve as a powerful stimulus for the development of agricultural science and breeding practices in our country. The Michurin Federal Research Center, the largest scientific center in Russia, operates in Michurinsk, combining the potential of leading institutes of the Tambov region. It conducts scientific research in all areas of breeding, creates unique technologies that ensure high productivity of plantations, fruit quality, and competitiveness in the fruit and berry markets. Scientific activities and personnel training for the agro-industrial complex are carried out at the Michurinsk State Agrarian University.
Today, the globally recognized brand "Michurin Apples" includes all the apple varieties grown in the Tambov region. The climate conditions of the region are not considered favorable for fruit cultivation; however, researchers believe that the stress load on plants during the formation and ripening of fruits contributes to their high nutritional value and well-balanced mineral composition.
Michurin apples are a true brand of the Tambov region! The city of Michurinsk itself is a hub for events dedicated to horticulture.
Each year, the Michurinsk municipal district hosts the spring festival "Michurin Apple Trees in Bloom," a unique event in the field of event tourism and agritourism.
Additionally, the city of Michurinsk annually holds the "Gardener's Day" exposition, the only specialized exposition in Russia where the entire technological chain of the horticultural complex is presented.
The main goal of the event is to demonstrate the achievements of domestic horticulture as an independent sector of agriculture capable of being competitive in the global market. Here, specialists have ample opportunities to exchange production and scientific experiences, learn about new technologies in horticulture, and attract investments.
Along with the RUSSIA EXPO, the flower festival is also coming to an end.
The "Future in Flowers" festival continues at the RUSSIA EXPO, where unique flowerbeds from all regions of our country can be seen at the "Space" pavilion until July 8.
The RUSSIA EXPO concludes on July 8, and with it, the flower festival will also come to an end.
