Amber Land. Kaliningrad
When we hear the name of the city of Kaliningrad, we imagine
placers of amber, "Dancing Forest", and the Baltic Gulf. These
symbols have taken deep roots in the memory of citizens and tourists, and
perfectly convey the unique spirit of the westernmost city in Russia.
The Dancing Forest is located at the Curonian Spit, a thin
stretch of land that separates the salty Baltic Sea and the freshwater Curonian
Lagoon. The opinions of botanists on why this forest has the pines with twisted
trunks vary. They suppose that the trees were affected by geomagnetic fields,
or by strong winds and caterpillar activity. The mysterious shape of the trees
inspired the creation of the main part of the composition. The stone symbol of
Kaliningrad — amber — is presented in the form of sculptures.
Architectural art objects in the form of transparent pipes
are filled with amber-colored glass. They are an allegory of amber extraction
from the bowels of the earth. The natural component is personified by twisted
pines, remotely resembling the pines of the Dancing Forest. We replace moss and
lichen with thyme, which grows in the Curonian Spit forests among
"dancing" pines. When the thyme starts to bloom, it forms a solid
carpet of blue-purple color. This carpet indirectly resembles the sea surface
of the Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea.
