Marya's root. Komi republic
Probably every resident of the Komi Republic knows and loves the song "Maryamol," dedicated to the beautiful and rare flower called Marya's root in Russian (Paeonia anomala or anomalous peony). In our country, there are 16 species of peonies, but in the republic, only the northernmost peony grows - Marya's root.
Marya's root is a herbaceous perennial that can reach a height of one meter. This peony has straight stems and large purple-pink flowers. Flowering begins in May, reaches its peak in June, but you can still find the last flowers even in July. This peony was named Marya's root for its unusually large underground part of the bush with a sharp smell and a sweet taste.
According to the Red Book of the Komi Republic, published in 2009, Marya's root can be found in many areas of the republic: in Timan, in the valleys of the mountain rivers Durnaya and Balbanyu, in the valleys of rivers in the Pechora lowlands and the Mezensko-Vychegodskaya plain. It is protected in the Pechoro-Ilychsky Reserve, the Yugyd Va National Park, and the reserves of Soyvinsky, Pomozdinsky, Svetly, and Pizhemsky.
In addition, Marya's root has been studied and actively used by specialists from the Botanical Garden of the Institute of Biology of the Komi Scientific Center for many years. This peony first entered the collection from the local flora of the republic in 1965.
Marya's root plays a significant role in the traditional medicine of the region. Its healing properties have been known since ancient times. Infusions are used as a sedative for neurasthenia with increased excitability. They also help with insomnia and reduce anxiety. Peony is used to make sedative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory medicines, as well as tonic supplements. In traditional Komi medicine, decoctions and infusions from the aerial part of the plant and petals are used for metabolic disorders.
By the way, the famous song "Maryamol," which many consider a folk song, was composed by the writer and poet Gennady Yushkov and the composer Vaclav Mastenitsa.
