Fern. Jewish Autonomous Region
The Jewish region is located in the south of the Far East.
Among the rich vegetation, the fern — a symbol of the beginning of life and the
Far Eastern talisman — stands out.
Fern is a relict plant, one of the oldest on Earth, its
history goes back millions of years. Ferns grow in forests and swamps, prefer
wet places and fertile soil. This plant can be found in many different parts of
the world, including Europe, Asia and America. And one of the most famous and
favorite fern species in the Far East is the eagle fern with beautiful leaves
up to 1 meter long.
Many peoples of the world consider the fern a sacred plant
and use it in various rituals and ceremonies. In some cultures it is also a
symbol of fertility and prosperity. On the night of Ivan Kupala throughout
Russia, girls used to weave wreaths of fern for their soulmates. And to find
the legendary fern flower meant to find your happiness.
In addition, fern is a medicinal plant, which is used in the
treatment of a variety of ailments. Fern helps to remove radionuclides,
normalizes the thyroid gland due to the iodine content, and a large amount of
fiber has a beneficial effect on intestinal peristalsis, removes toxins,
improves metabolism. Koreans living in the Far East consider fern as an elixir
of youth, which is especially indispensable in poor ecology.
Fern also has excellent flavor properties. Local cooks
prepare various dishes and drinks from it. It is a low-calorie product (34 kcal
in 100 grams), but it has a lot of protein (4.5 grams per 100 grams) and many
microelements: potassium, magnesium, iodine, sulfur, phosphorus, nickel,
copper. Cooks call the fern Siberian asparagus. In the Jewish region, the most
popular dish is salad with fern. In the 30s, local residents taught new
immigrants from the European part of Russia how to cook it. And in many
respects, it saved them from avitaminosis in those difficult years. In
Birobidzhan they especially like fern salads, as well as a combination of meat
and fern.
Fern can also be a decorative plant. The fern's shade
tolerance allows it to be placed in the farthest corners of the garden. Fern
serves as an excellent background for perennial bulbs. It can be combined with
heuchera (coral bells), brunnera, hostas and thyme.
