Veronica. Moscow
Veronica (or speedwell) is a floral symbol of Moscow. The name of the flower comes from the Latin words vera
unica — "real medicine".
Veronica is the largest genus of flowering plants of the plantain
family, a forest-steppe species. All wild
species of Veronica have a common feature — it is a blue shade of petals, the
color of a clear sky on a summer day. Inflorescences are spike-shaped or
panicle-shaped, consisting of many small buds. Blossoming is long, for a month
and a half, falls at the height of summer. Breeders have long been interested
in Veronica and have developed many decorative varieties with sky blue, navy
blue, pink and white spike-shaped inflorescences.
Species differ significantly in bush height and the shape of
inflorescences, as well as growing conditions. Shade-tolerant groundcover plants grow under the
canopy of deciduous forests, sun-loving — in meadows and steppes. Some
species climb to the uplands, others descend to the water and inhabit the banks
of rivers and streams.
Veronica is a companion plant. Its beauty is modest, its hues are
restrained and the shape of its inflorescences is graceful. The spike-shaped
inflorescences complement perennial flowering plants and create organic
landscape compositions.
Curtains of Veronica in the flower garden "Moscow — Blooming Symphony of Banks" complement well osteospermum (African daisy), sage oak, monarda, argyranthemum, wormwood, dichondra argentea, lupines, delphiniums, purple foxglove, hybrid aubrieta, scaevolas, gray spirea and false spirea.
There is a legend about Veronica. Once upon a time, such flowers
did not exist in the world. There were
no threaded speedwells, or Persian, or spikey, or alpine — in short, none!
Legend has it that in one village there was a girl who was madly
in love with a young man and was going to marry him. But her betrothed fell ill
and began to wither from day to day, and no medicine could help him. The girl
appealed to the local witch doctor with a request to give her an herb that
could cure her beloved, but he only shook his head: there is no such herb in
the world. In despair, our heroine fell to the ground and turned into a
hitherto unknown tender-green plant with blue flowers. The healer prepared a
decoction from the plant, gave it to the young man and a miracle happened: the
dying man recovered.
The meaning and symbolism of Veronica is fidelity. Veronica is
very romantic. It brings its "blue-eyed" charm to any composition. Perfectly
suitable for bouquets intended for sentimental women, young girls, brides.
The symbolism of Veronica in the flower
bed "Moscow — Blooming Symphony of Banks" is in the healing harmony and unity
of the city with nature.
