Most Russian epic poems were preserved on Karelian land — Artur Parfenchikov
Petrozavodsk is among Russia’s top three cultural cities. This was stated by the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, during the "Region-2030. Republic of Karelia" series of meetings at the National Centre RUSSIA. He noted that the region’s cultural wealth is closely linked to its careful preservation of traditions.
"Karelia is the homeland of preserved epic poems: 95% of all Russian bylinas, including the entire Kievan cycle, were preserved on Karelian land, in Zaonezhye. Karelia is the land of the Kalevala — meaning runes, epic poems and unique traditions of choral singing. It is no coincidence that Petrozavodsk today ranks among Russia’s top three cultural cities. We have five theatres, including a unique Puppet Theatre, which received the Golden Mask Award for its production of The Government Inspector," Artur Parfenchikov said.
The Republic of Karelia thematic week is taking place at the National Centre RUSSIA from 27 January to 1 February. Guests will be able to explore the region’s culture, nature, traditions, as well as its tourism and economic potential. The programme includes business, cultural and educational events. More information is available on the russia.ru website, and registration for individual events is open in the "Events" section.
On 29 January 2026, the 166th anniversary of the birth of the great writer will be marked — a man who emerged from the Russian provinces.
