Artur Parfenchikov: the aquaculture industry is developing rapidly in Karelia
Around 50% of all trout produced in Russia is farmed in the Republic of Karelia. Western sanctions pressure on Russia has become a powerful stimulus for the development of the aquaculture sector in the region. This was stated by the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, at the National Centre RUSSIA on 29 January. His remarks were delivered during the presentation of the development strategy "Region-2030. Republic of Karelia".
"We are building a full aquaculture value chain, from fish stocking material to commercial production and fish processing. Last year, a unique fish feed production facility was launched. We are actively developing modern technologies, including closed-loop systems, as well as facilities based on underground water sources. Mussels are already being farmed in Karelia and, according to gourmets, they are the most delicious. We are harvesting White Sea algae — a unique asset of the republic — a high-quality product rich in nutrients. In the near future, a seaweed processing facility is planned to be launched near Petrozavodsk for the subsequent production of baby food," Artur Parfenchikov said.
He noted that the region is implementing an instruction from the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, aimed at developing a culture of healthy nutrition in the country. According to Artur Parfenchikov, Karelia seeks to ensure that the diets of Russian citizens include as much fish, seaweed, mussels and other aquaculture products as possible.
The Republic of Karelia thematic week is taking place at the National Centre RUSSIA from 27 January to 1 February. Guests will be able to explore the region’s culture, nature, traditions, as well as its tourism and economic potential. The programme includes business, cultural and educational events.
