Magadan region Christmas tree: Endless riches of Kolyma and riddles of Evenki culture
The main
theme in the decoration of the Magadan region New Year tree is, of course, gold
mining - the main source of the region's wealth. The spruce is decorated with
imitated gold nuggets, which are supported by garlands of gold balls.
This golden
shine is shaded by panels with colored ornaments and patterns of indigenous
peoples living on the territory of the Magadan region - Evenki culture, which
also have a deep symbolic meaning. Evenks are one of the most ancient peoples
of Siberia, descendants of the inhabitants of the Tungus state of the Golden
Empire.
When the
empire was defeated by Genghis Khan's troops, some of the Tungus left for the
north, and the Evenki prince began to serve the Russian tsar. Until the 1930s,
the Evenks were called Tungus - from the Yakut "toҥ uus" (i.e. "master of
cold"). In different regions of Siberia the people were called
differently, depending on their occupation. In Zabaykalye or Transbaikalia they
were called orochen (reindeer herder), in Buryatia - murchen (horse breeder).
The self-name of Evenks "evenkil" translates as "living in the
mountains" or "walking across the ridges".
Today, 38
thousand Evenks live in Russia - this is the largest nationality of northern
Siberia.
