A series of workshops for future explorers concludes at the "Geography Lessons" exposition
The "Geography Lessons" exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA is drawing to a close. For more than three months, it has surprised guests not only with major scientific discoveries and unique exhibits, but also with a rich programme of events, which concluded on 5 July with a series of workshops in the "Geography Classroom" lecture hall that guests had grown to love.
At the first practical session, guests of the National Centre RUSSIA explored what first aid is and how it differs from medical care. The instructors explained that the main task of a person providing assistance is not to try to cure the victim or completely resolve the problem, but to prevent their condition from worsening before doctors arrive. Particular attention was paid to common everyday situations: for example, workshop participants learned why burns should be cooled with water rather than treated with oil or sour cream.
A three-station format allowed participants to practise the assistance procedures. Under the guidance of instructors, guests learned three key skills: how to help someone who has lost consciousness, what can stop bleeding, and what to do if a person is choking and cannot breathe.
Another practical session in the "Geography Classroom" lecture hall helped participants see for themselves that any long trip into the countryside should begin not with buying tickets, but with learning essential outdoor skills to be ready for any surprises. Workshop guests had the opportunity to work with real hiking equipment, from a compass to a professional expedition backpack.
"A compass today is seen as something funny and archaic, but the workshop convinced me that this is not the case. It is excellent backup that will not run out of power like a modern smartphone, which means it will never let you down," said Inessa Korableva from Kaluga.
A separate part of the session was devoted to the art of packing a backpack. The instructors explained why proper weight distribution is more important than expensive equipment and how, if a sleeping bag, mat, cooking pot and other contents are packed correctly, a hiking backpack can become not a burden but a true companion on the journey.
One of the most exciting stages was rope practice: participants learned knots that can be useful not only on a hike, but also in everyday life. After the theoretical part, the participants split into teams to consolidate their new skills in a fun contest.
"We come to events at the National Centre RUSSIA from time to time and are very pleased — there are so many positive emotions. Today, I brought my granddaughter and told her, 'You never know what might happen in life, and perhaps at some point you will remember something from this workshop and it will come in useful — tying a knot, for example.' In general, everything here is wonderful: the setting, the atmosphere and, importantly, the fact that it is all free. Because when you attend events with the whole family, it can all become quite expensive," shared Natalia from Moscow.
The "Geography Lessons" exposition at the National Centre RUSSIA is aimed at promoting geographical knowledge, fostering patriotism and encouraging interest in the multinational and cultural diversity of our country. Designed for families and schoolchildren aged 9–16, the exposition runs through 9 July. Admission is free, as it is for all events and activities at the National Centre RUSSIA.
