A real spacesuit and myths about the first space flight: the VEB.RF pavilion celebrated Cosmonautics Day
12.04.2024
On April 12, visitors to the VEB.RF pavilion "Cities for Life Come True" joined the celebration of Cosmonautics Day and felt like true pioneers.
Throughout the day, everyone could try on a cosmonaut's costume and a real spacesuit - a copy of the SK-1 spacesuit in which Yuri Gagarin made the first space flight in history. The SK-1 spacesuit is also known as Gagarin's spacesuit: it was designed specifically for the world's first manned space flight. Thanks to its soft construction, the cosmonauts were able to move freely in zero gravity conditions. It was also equipped with the necessary life support system and protected from the harmful effects of the space environment. Visitors to the pavilion learned about the clothes of cosmonauts and the sensations that are experienced during a real space flight.
Also on Cosmonautics Day in the VEB.RF pavilion, the Polytechnic Museum held a lecture on the myths surrounding the first human space flight. The flight of Yuri Gagarin was a real triumph of science and technology and opened a new era in the history of mankind. How did it happen? And why did it last not 108, but 106 minutes? Pavel Gaiduk, senior researcher of the Interdisciplinary Projects Department of the Polytechnic Museum, talked about these and other details that were revealed thanks to declassified documents and the basics of orbital mechanics.
