The National Centre RUSSIA and the Russian Museum of Ethnography sign cooperation agreement
A cooperation agreement between the National Centre RUSSIA
and the Russian Museum of Ethnography was signed as part of the XII St.
Petersburg International United Cultures Forum. The document establishes a
partnership between the two institutions for the development and implementation
of the International Ethnographic Triennial (IET) over the next decade.
The IET, a major original project of the National Centre RUSSIA, was conceived
at the intersection of art, anthropology and ethnography. Its main goal is to
present Russia as one of the leading actors in the global cultural process and
create an international platform for exploring the role of ethnic traditions in
the context of 21st-century global culture. To achieve this, the project plans
to involve specialists from different countries in art, science, ethnography,
anthropology and cultural studies, showcase the richness of regional cultures
and their contemporary expression, and develop a new model of cultural
communication bringing together professionals and a broad audience.
"It is very important to us that such strong partners as the Russian
Museum of Ethnography are supporting us in implementing the International
Ethnographic Triennial. The Museum shares with us its experience in educational
and research work, which makes it possible to speak about legacy not as a
collection of exhibits, but as living knowledge passed from person to person,
from generation to generation. Together,
we will make the IET a space for dialogue between regions and countries,
generations, science and contemporary art," said Natalia Virtuozova,
Director General of the National Centre RUSSIA.
The two institutions will combine their intellectual, production and human
resources to carry out joint research, cultural and educational, exposition and
exhibition, publishing and information activities. A separate area of
cooperation will be the "Towards the IET" research and exhibition
integrations as a preliminary part of the project, as well as the consolidation
and dissemination of best practices in ethnographic museum studies and
education.
"It is very important that the United Cultures Forum and the Ethnographic
Triennial have very similar objectives — developing a culture of discussion.
For modern society, this is perhaps one of the most important things. This
culture needs to be supported and developed. After all, ethnography itself
includes fields that study language and communication. We hope that the IET,
like the Forum, will become a space where people of different cultures and
faiths communicate with one another, and that the project will become not only
a research tool, but also a new ethnographic field," emphasised Yulia
Kupina, Director of the Russian Museum of Ethnography.
The agreement marks the beginning of a joint journey for the two cultural
institutions. Ahead are new projects and research in different regions of the
country at the intersection of academic scholarship, museum practice and
people's interest in the culture and traditions of the peoples of our country.
In addition, on 24 September, Natalia Virtuozova, Director General of the
National Centre RUSSIA, took part in the St. Petersburg International United
Cultures Forum in the thematic section "Cultural Heritage: Traditions and
Modernity". She was one of the key speakers at the panel discussion "The
Power of Legacy: Identity for Unity".
