Anyone can save a life: first aid masterclass held at the National Centre RUSSIA
You don't have to be a doctor to save a life – knowing the
basic techniques of first aid is enough. That was the key message delivered to
children and their parents at a masterclass on first aid. The event took place
in the lecture hall of the "Geography Lessons" exposition at the
National Centre RUSSIA.
During the session, guests explored what first aid actually
is and how it differs from emergency medical treatment. The first aid's goal is
to prevent a casualty's condition from worsening and to support them until
medical professionals arrive. Special attention was paid to the safety of the
rescuer: it is important to assess the situation and not put yourself at risk.
One of the topics covered at the masterclass was burns and
temperature-related injuries. Participants learned why, in the case of burns,
one should first run the cool water over the affected area rather than applying
oil, sour cream or cosmetic creams, and why sudden temperature changes caused
by ice can be harmful. Common scenarios were discussed, including sunburn and
heatstroke on the beach, hypothermia and the transition to frostbite, insect
bites, electrical burns and everyday household incidents.
During the practical session, participants had a chance to practice
the procedure for responding to someone who has lost consciousness. They
learned how to check for a response to verbal stimuli, assess breathing,
correctly tilt the head back, and place a person in the recovery position (on
their side) to prevent choking and the tongue blocking the airway.
Schoolchildren and adults also practiced stopping bleeding by using direct
pressure on the wound, makeshift bandages, and socks and scarves – and were
introduced to the principles of safely applying a tourniquet.
Young guests noted that they take first aid knowledge
seriously and are happy to learn new skills even during the school holidays.
"I want to go to medical school, and first aid is the
most basic thing a future doctor should know. It was interesting when they laid
me on my back and showed us all how to properly turn someone over if they are
unconscious. I learned a lot of new things," said 11-year-old Alina
Izotova from Moscow.
Besides that, at the "Geography Lessons"
exposition, the interactive "Camp of Masters" stations continue to
operate, where visitors acquire basic outdoor skills: learning how to properly
pack a hiking backpack, tie strong and reliable knots, and set up a tent. The
interactive stations will be open every day until 9 July. And on Sundays, young visitors can take part in
the immersive quest "The Mystery of the Lost Map". Keep an eye on the
schedule for updates on the website russia.ru in the
"Events" section.
The new episode offers viewers a broader perspective on familiar historical events.
