"The Secret of the Lost Map": immersive quest for young travellers launched at the "Geography Lessons" exposition
An unusual adventure has begun at the National Centre
RUSSIA. From 10 May, the immersive quest "The Secret of the Lost Map", designed for young guests aged 6 to 14, will be held every Sunday in
the "Geography Lessons" exposition space. Among the exhibits gathered
from across the country for the "Geography Lessons" exposition, an
ancient treasure is hidden. It weighs almost nothing, but legend has it that it
is worth more than a bag of gold. Only a worthy traveller will be able to find
it. The guides tell guests about a mysterious map that sheds light on the
location of the treasure, and then everyone sets off together on an expedition
full of challenges.
The route runs through the themed halls of the exposition,
and in each one the participants receive a new part of the secret code. In the
hall "Courage. Expeditions and Discoveries", children learn about the
drifting station "North Pole-1" and the famous "Papanin
Four", and then learn on the spot how to pack a real hiking backpack. At
the model of the legendary ship "Nadezhda", on which Ivan Krusenstern
and Yuri Lisyansky completed the first Russian circumnavigation, the young
travellers learn to tie hiking knots. In the hall "Distances. Overcoming
Vast Spaces", they discover the history of transport in Russia: from
Alexander II’s coronation phaeton to the train of the future on the first
high-speed railway. In the hall "Aspiration. The Guiding Star", the
children are in for a real surprise — a dome scattered with constellations,
where each participant learns to find the North Star and use it to determine
the cardinal directions.
"What I liked most was looking for constellations in
the space hall. It is very beautiful, just like a planetarium. We also tied
knots like real sailors, and at the end we found the treasure, which I will
definitely learn how to use now," said ten-year-old Misha, one of the
first participants in the quest.
The challenges continue in the hall "Resources. Gifts
of Geography". Here, participants look for natural materials that can be
very useful on any hike: moss that can replace a bandage, stones that retain
heat, and many others. In the "Geography Class", at old school desks
designed by Fyodor Erisman in the last century, each participant finds an
outline map in the desk, marks their favourite cities on it, indicates the
resources they learned about in the previous hall, and together they receive a
new code.
The final point of the route is the decoding of an ancient
message in the hall "Power. Battles for Geography", where four high
reliefs dedicated to the main battles of our country await the participants.
Then, after returning to the "Map Gallery", the children find the
treasured box in which the treasure is hidden — an item that really weighs
almost nothing, but on a journey can be worth more than any coins. As a reward
for completing the route and working well as a team, each participant takes a
part of this treasure home.
"I have been to the National Centre RUSSIA before, but
this was my first time at this exposition, and I really liked the quest. The
hosts were wonderful, the tasks were interesting — all in all, I had a very
warm and enjoyable time. At school, I prefer chemistry and biology, but maps
are a separate story: I love them too. And at this exposition, they are so
beautiful! I answered many of the quest questions correctly, so I was made team
captain and entrusted with keeping all the parts of the code we found in the
halls," said 12-year-old schoolgirl Alexandra.
The immersive journey through the exposition ends with
traditional "gatherings" around an improvised campfire and group
singing to a guitar. Everyone takes away not only a piece of the treasure they
found, but also a warm sense of unity and the belief that the most valuable
treasures are friendship, courage and the willingness to follow a dream, even
when the road is unknown. Geography is not just a science, but an exciting
adventure that begins with an ordinary school lesson.
The children’s quest "The Secret of the Lost Map"
will be held at the National Centre RUSSIA every Sunday from 10 May to 5 July. There
will be three sessions each day: at 11:00, 13:00 and 16:00. The journey lasts
one hour. Participation is free with advance registration on russia.ru. Come
and discover the secrets of the "Geography Lessons" exposition and
feel like a real explorer of the vast spaces of your native country.
